Freshmen, freshmeat
Today was the official first day of class at our university. That means, the poor new kids have a week of torture coming ahead, and it started today. When I was a new kid in August of last year, they didn’t play any bad pranks on me or any of my friends, but a lot of people had bad experiences. Today the initiation rituals of the “welcome committee” were cruel and humiliating as always. When I was at the food court eating with my friends, a sudden banging noise is heard approaching. Freshmen start running out the food court, although some foolish little birdies stayed. The banging noise were a couple of members from our University Tuna (a kind of music group) with huge loud drums, trumpets and whistles. I have to admit they made beautiful, happy, pumping, jumpy, party-like music. They were followed by no less than another hundred students, who were in to mock freshmen.
Once inside the food court they made freshmen dance on tables (hence the picture of that random stranger), which sounds kind of fun, but then after they stopped dancing, they’d write a big fat “P” in their foreheads with a big fat permanent marker. “P” is for “prepa” which is some kind of Spanish slang for “freshman” in a derogatory way. They went mostly for girls since they wanted to see them dancing, but when they went for guys, they throw food at him and yell “gay” at him in a huge chorus. Now out the food court, they covered the new kids with shaving cream, eggs, vinegar, clothes bleach and even pee.
I admit that I kind of joined them because the music was so catchy and fun. My friends and I stood in the chairs (not the tables!) and danced and clapped all the time for the fun of it.
On other notes, I added a section with Wordpress themes and I am about to add a couple of more drawing that I’ve done :)

Oh hurray! Wordpress themes… except I’m a Textpattern user. I guess I’ll have fun converting the theme then. :)
I’m going to be an eighth grader next year, and it’s customary to torture the incoming seventh graders by being obnoxious and rude. It’s just the way things work at my school. Will their be radicals? Most definitely, people who want to change the way things work, but who’s going to actually stop torturing the ‘little kids?’ /end sarcasm
I guess you’ll have to forgive the freshman if they make stupid mistakes because of course, they have to adapt to a new environment. I was an idiot when I first entered seventh grade as well. ;)
Freshmen-baiting doesn’t seem to be too bad at my high school. I never noticed it when I was a freshman, and I don’t think I’ve taken part in it myself. ;)
Wow, that’s some hazing. At my high school there would have been an uproar if the upperclassmen did stuff like that to the freshman! And in college I’ve never heard of such hazings at my school, except maybe in fraternities or sororities, and that’s a big maybe.
That sounds terribly scary! I only thought they do stuff like that in fraternities and sororities… What kind of university/college are you at? Now I’m scared of studying in the US :/
They do that in college? That’s pretty mean to me, I would think people would outgrow that type of stuff. We don’t do that type of stuff at my college. I mean maybe the fraternities, sororities, and different clubs and organizations, but the upperclassmen don’t treat the freshman like that =\. Or maybe I was just not around to see it? I do not know lol. And even pee? That’s terrible, stuff like that should not be allowed.
the wordpress themes look nice.
Glad I’m going to Bible College.
LOL
We do something like that here. Except since we’re still in highschool,we do this kind of stuff on Homecoming. There’s a dance and a big football game. And on that day the seniors usually go around writing on the freshman foreheads. They write something like “Seniors & and the year they graduate”. I had it done. But last year it was banned because the vice principle thought we were going to hurt people
@ Adastra - Oh don’t be scared… actually I am not from the US perse, I don’t know how US campuses are. This is just PR.
@Mimi - Definitely terrible, and yes, they fill balloons with pee and throw them at people.
@ Shawna - Really? LOL
Freshman Week in Canada is definitely tame compared to this! Hahaha!
That’s pretty funny. It sucks that upperclassmen think they always have the right to do dumb things to freshmen. But then again, I’m sure they had it done to them. But when did it all start? lol. I’ll be a freshman, but at a community college, so I’m not too worried about being canned or given swirlies. hehe.
Also, I can’t believe school starts so early for you. I mean, I guess it’s not that early, but I don’t start until next week and THAT is considered pretty early, at least in America.
lol I sooo commented this yesterday, where’d my comment go?!
Like I said, some can pull of some great pranks on them, but have to take some limits and not over-exaggerate.
They didn’t pull off anything special when we were freshmen, some had to “drive a formula” on the toilet. *fun times =)*
wtf - freshers week at my uni is about getting as drunk as possible - meeting everyone, making a fool of yourself then dragging yourself to your intro lectures in the morning!!
noones mean to freshers although 2nd year guys try to get off with as many of the girsl as possible!
You would be expelled for doing stuff like that at my school. My school has a no hazing tolerance policy.
LOL! That sounds sort of fun but embaressing in the same way. I can’t wait to experience university life, it sounds pretty exciting.
JAJAJA mi amigo dice que ponian a los prepas a bailar “La Pelua!” :P dito!!
